Mortar Blasts in Somali Capital Kill 1, Police Chief Killed in South

Somali insurgents have stepped up attacks in the capital, Mogadishu, killing at least one person and wounding more than 11 others, hours after a police chief in the south was shot dead.

Witnesses in Mogadishu say a barrage of mortar shells crashed down into several areas of the city Sunday as insurgents continued to fight Ethiopian and government troops.

Violence in the capital has been increasing since Somalia's interim government drove out a rival Islamist movement late last year with the help of Ethiopian troops.

Meanwhile, in the southern port town of Kismayo, a Somali police chief, Major Abdi Mohamed Abdulle leading a crackdown on insurgents, was killed by one of his bodyguards.

Witnesses to the attack Saturday night say the motive was not immediately clear.
