Dario Franchitti of Scotland has steered to victory at the 91st running of the rain-shortened Indianapolis 500 race in Indiana.
After an earlier interruption due to rain, a hard downpour drenched the track for a second time Sunday, ending the race on the 165th lap - 35 laps short of the scheduled distance around the famed four-kilometer oval.
Rolling with a cut tire, Franchitti had only enough fuel for 10 more laps. But with rain looming, Franchitti's team gambled and kept him on the track while other drivers stopped for fuel.
Scott Dixon placed second and Ryan Briscoe was third.
Brazilian Tony Kanaan led the race before the first rain delay - a three-hour stop at lap 113 of 200. A flat tire after the re-start cost Kanaan a chance for his first Indy win.
The race also featured a handful of spectacular crashes, but with no serious injuries.
