Police in California say they arrested the son of former U.S. Vice President Al Gore on suspicion of drug possession early Wednesday.
A spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department said Albert Gore, 24, was speeding on a highway at about 160 kilometers per hour when police stopped him. The spokesman said police smelled marijuana, and subsequently searched Gore's car.
The search allegedly yielded a small amount of marijuana, along with prescription drugs including Xanax, Valium, Vicodin and Adderall. The spokesman said Gore did not have a prescription for any of the drugs.
Gore was released from a jail cell in Santa Ana later Wednesday on bail of $20,000.
In 2003, Gore was arrested and charged for marijuana possession in the eastern U.S. state of Maryland after police stopped his car. He entered a substance abuse program as part of a plea agreement to settle those charges.
He was also arrested in 2002 for suspected drunken driving.
His father is now a leading environmental advocate.
