Hundreds Without Heat in Two Siberian Villages

More than 600 people in two Siberian villages are spending another night enduring bitterly cold temperatures as authorities struggle to repair the broken central heating systems.

Temperatures in the towns of Markha and Artyk plunged as low as minus 52 degrees Celsius Wednesday, sending temperatures in houses and apartments well below freezing.

Officials from nearby villages flew in stoves and emergency equipment to help residents keep warm while more than 100 experts worked to repair the damaged heaters.

The system in the two villages broke down on December 28.
