Spanish Police Find Bomb Material, Arrest Suspected Islamic Militants

Spanish police arrested 14 suspected radical Islamic militants early Saturday in Barcelona.

Spain's interior minister said police raided five homes and found materials for making bombs. He said the evidence shows the suspects may have been planning an attack.

Spanish Civil Guard police carried out the searches in cooperation with agents from Spain's domestic security service. They acted on tips from several European intelligence agencies.

Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba told reporters in Madrid that police also found various materials for making explosives, plus computers and four timer mechanisms. He said the timers could only be used in an attack, most likely in Barcelona.

Of the 14 suspected radical terrorists, 12 are Pakistanis and the other two are from India.

Minister Rubalcaba said the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are possible.

Muslim militants have claimed responsibility for the Madrid train bombings on March 11, 2004 that killed 191 people in Europe's deadliest Islamic-linked terror attack.
