Barack Obama's Kenyan relatives have high hopes for the Illinois senator to be elected president of the United States.
Obama's grandmother - Sarah Hussein Obama - told the Associated Press Wednesday that her grandson is determined to become president. The AP reports she listened to Tuesday's election results under the shade of a mango tree.
The 86-year-old grandmother lives in the Kenyan village of Nyang'oma, near the shores of Lake Victoria, where Barack Obama's father was born and raised.
Barack Obama Senior moved to Hawaii for his studies and met and married the woman who would later become the mother of Barack Obama, Jr., the current candidate.
The couple later separated and Obama's father returned to Kenya, were he worked as a government economist before dying in a car crash in 1982. The younger Barack Obama was mostly raised by his mother and her parents.
Obama has visited his relatives in Kenya, including a trip in 2006 that drew excitement and crowds of thousands.
