Fire in Thailand Nightclub Kills at Least 59

Officials in Thailand say at least 59 people have been killed in a fire at a popular Bangkok nightclub as they were celebrating the New Year.

Police say about 130 others were injured in the blaze at the Santika club in the city's Thong Lor district.

Witnesses say the two-story nightclub was completely gutted by the fire, and that the roof of the building collapsed.

Fire officials say the death toll was made worse by the fact that there were few exits from the building and because windows on the upper floors had iron bars on them.

The cause of the fire is not clear. Some reports say the fire was caused by a pyrotechnics display, and others say that firecrackers or an electrical display caused the blaze. Police say they are still investigating.

The club is popular with both locals and foreign tourists.
