Officials in southern Sudan say more than 170 people have been killed in clashes between rival tribesmen.
A local government official for Akobo county, in Jonglei state, Doyak Chol, said armed fighters from the Murle ethnic group attacked villages of the Lou Nuer community on Saturday and Sunday.
Chol says the bodies of 177 people have already been found. He says that many others remain unaccounted for, and that the death toll could increase to 300.
Sudan's Jonglei state is the scene of frequent clashes and cattle raids by rival ethnic groups.
This was the second outbreak of deadly violence between the Murle and Lou Nuer groups in just over a month.
