Pele's Shirt Fetches $220,000 - 2002-03-27

How much is a soccer shirt worth? Some would answer only a few dollars. But, when it is the shirt worn by Brazilian football legend Pele in the 1970 World Cup, it becomes significantly more valuable.

In fact, an anonymous bidder was willing to pay more than $220,000 for Pele's number 10 jersey today, at an auction in London. A spokesman for Christie's said the auction house is delighted with the sale.

The shirt was put up for sale by Italian international player Roberto Rosato, who exchanged shirts with Pele after Brazil beat Italy, 4-1, to win the 1970 World Cup.

The previous record for a football shirt was more than $129,000 for the jersey worn by England's Geoff Hurst during the 1966 World Cup in England. Christie's sold his shirt in September of 2000.
