Tanzanian officials say at least 20 people were killed overnight by a series of explosions at a military munitions dump.
The blasts began late Wednesday at the Gongola Mboto military base, near the international airport in Dar es Salaam, and continued for several hours.
Witnesses say nearby neighborhoods were showered with debris that destroyed at least two homes and a secondary school.
Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda told Parliament Thursday that at least 145 people were wounded in the blasts. He said 4,000 others sought shelter at a local stadium.
He said initial reports do not indicate foul play, but that officials are investigating the cause of the blasts.
Similar explosions erupted at another army base in 2009, killing at least 26 people and wounding hundreds more.
