17 Afghans, NATO Member Killed in Separate Attacks

Afghan officials say a roadside bomb planted by Taliban militants in the country's west has killed 17 villagers, mostly women.

They say the villagers had been traveling in a vehicle in Herat province.

In another incident, an Afghan soldier opened fire at the Kandahar air base in southern Afghanistan, killing a NATO service member.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said the incident is being investigated.

It did not immediately disclose the nationality of the ISAF soldier who was killed. Some reports said Slovak soldiers were among those fired upon.

The U.S.-led force has faced a series of so-called "insider attacks" in recent years by disgruntled members of NATO-allied Afghan security forces.
