Colombia Mission Under Way for French Journalist's Release

French kidnapped reporter Romeo Langlois for France 24 is seen in an undated video frame released in Caracas, May 28, 2012 by news station Telesur.

A humanitarian delegation is in the remote Colombian rain forest in an effort to secure the release of a kidnapped French journalist.

The International Committee of the Red Cross told VOA that a convoy made up of Red Cross staff, a member of the French government and three representatives of a local human rights group, left the Caqueta state capital of Florencia Wednesday morning.

ICRC representative Alexis Heeb says the time of the handover depends on the difficulties encountered in reaching the remote meeting place.

French journalist Romeo Langlois was captured by FARC rebels on April 28 during an attack on troops. He was accompanying them to film a drug eradication operation.

On Monday, the rebels released a video showing Langlois in a jungle setting reportedly in good health.

The Colombian army has agreed to suspend all military operations in the area for at least 36 hours while the handover is carried out.

FARC has been at war with the Colombian government since the 1960s. In February, the rebel group renounced the practice of kidnappings for ransom.

FARC has been designated as a terrorist organization by Colombia, the United States and the European Union.
