Elon Musk: Nuking Mars Could Pave Way for Colonization

FILE - Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors Inc., unveils the company’s newest products in Hawthorne, Calif., April 30, 2015.

Entrepreneur Elon Musk thinks dropping thermonuclear weapons on Mars could help quickly make the red planet fit for human life.

The CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX made the remarks Wednesday on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, calling Mars "a fixer-upper of a planet."

Musk said dropping atom bombs on Mars’ poles would be the fastest way to warm the planet, paving the way for possible human colonization. The slower way, he said, would be to pump the thin atmosphere with greenhouse gases.

Colbert, who began hosting the late night talk show this week – taking over from David Letterman who retired – jokingly called Musk a “supervillain.”

"Superman doesn't say 'let's drop nuclear bombs.' That's Lex Luthor, man," Colbert added.
