Google to Remove Image of Dead Body

The body of a shot teenager was visible on a Google Maps satellite image near Richmond, California.

Tech giant Google says it will remove a satellite image from its Google Maps that shows the body of a teenage boy who was shot and killed in 2009.

The photo shows police gathered around Kevin Barrera, 14, who was shot to death near railroad tracks in Richardson, California.

Barerra’s father, Jose, only learned about the image last week and then asked Google to remove it.

“When I see this image, that's still like that happened yesterday,” Barrera told San Francisco Bay Area television station KTVU. “And that brings me back to a lot of memories.”

On Monday, KTVU asked Google what they planned to do, and received an e-mail from Brian McClendon, the vice president of Google Maps who said the company would replace the image.

“Our hearts go out to the family of this young boy. Since the media first contacted us about the image, we’ve been looking at different technical solutions,” said the statement from McClendon. “Google has never accelerated the replacement of updated satellite imagery from our maps before, but given the circumstances we wanted to make an exception in this case.”

McClendon said it could take up to eight days to replace the image.
