Iraqi Military Hits Jihadist Fuel Convoy

Iraqi army helicopters have attacked a convoy of fuel tankers trying to illegally enter Iraq from eastern Syria, killing at least eight people.

Reports say the operation took place early Sunday inside Syria near Iraq's western Anbar province.

An Iraqi Interior Ministry spokesman said the tanker trucks were aiming to supply fuel to an al-Qaida affiliate, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

The jihadist group has controlled parts of Anbar province since December and has frequently battled with Iraqi security forces.

The group also has carried out bomb attacks in Baghdad. One last Friday killed more than 30 people at a Shi'ite political rally. Iraq is to hold parliamentary elections April 30.
