Latam Plane Collides with Firetruck on Runway in Peru

People wait outside the closed Jorge Chavez International Airport after the accident of the LA2213 flight in Lima, on Nov. 18, 2022.

In Peru, a Latam Airlines plane on takeoff collided with a firetruck Friday at Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport. Two firefighters were killed and a third seriously injured.

The Aviation Herald, an aviation accident reporting website, reported that “multiple fire trucks with flashing lights and sirens sounding crossed the runway in front of the accelerating aircraft.”

The airline crew aborted the takeoff but couldn't avoid contact with the fire truck. The plane caught fire as it skidded to a stop.

Latam Airlines said all the flight’s 102 passengers and six crew members survived the collision. Peru’s health ministry said 20 people are being treated for injuries.

It was not immediately clear why the fire trucks were on the runway.

The airport will remain closed while the accident is being investigated and the plane and truck are cleared from the runway.
