President Barack and Obama and his wife Michelle's elder daughter will take a year off after graduating from high school and attend the prestigious Harvard University in 2017.
"The President and Mrs. Obama announced today that their daughter Malia will attend Harvard University in the fall of 2017 as a member of the Class of 2021. Malia will take a gap year before beginning school," a White House statement said Sunday.
Malia, 17, is a senior at Sidwell Friends, a private Washington area school. Her younger sister Sasha, 14, is a freshman there.
During the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday, Obama said his family plans to stay in Washington after he leaves office next year so that Sasha can finish high school.
