Instagram Changes Logo, Social Media Erupts

The popular photo sharing app, Instagram, changed its logo, causing the Internet to freak out.

Popular photo sharing app Instagram changed its iconic logo, setting off a social media fire storm.

The old icon featured a warmly cartoonish depiction of a vintage camera, while the new one is a blast of neon and fuchsia with the camera reduced to a white outline of a camera.

Predictably, many did not like the change and took to social media to mock and complain in what the New York Times called “The Great Instagram Logo Freakout of 2016.”

Casual users were not alone in criticizing the change, with AdWeek magazine calling the new logo a “travesty.”

In the past people haven’t welcomed change to their social media apps. Nearly every time Facebook changed its look, the company was lambasted by users who eventually get used to the new look.

In a blog post, Instagram said its “community has evolved over the past five years from a place to share filtered photos to so much more – a global community of interests sharing more than 80m photos and videos every day. Our updated look reflects how vibrant and diverse your storytelling has become.”

Instagram is the tenth most popular mobile app in the U.S.

Here are some of the reactions on Twitter.
