Obama: Ensure Equal Pay for Equal Work for Women

President Barack Obama speaks during his visit to Valencia College in Orlando, Florida, March 20, 2014.

U.S. President Barack Obama says the economy should reward the hard work of every American, including women.

The president said in his weekly address Saturday more women than ever before are the main breadwinners for their families, yet, on average, a woman earns just 77 cents for every dollar a man earns.

Obama called on Congress to ensure that women earn equal pay for equal work, and paid leave to take care of a sick child or parent. The U.S. leader said "no woman who works full-time should ever have to raise her children in poverty."

President Obama also urged Congress to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour, a move he said would lift the wages for nearly 28 million Americans across the country.
