Officials in Lebanon say clashes between supporters and opponents of a popular uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have erupted in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, leaving one person dead and at least five wounded.

Officials say gunfire broke out early Saturday.

Gunmen from the Jabal Mohsen district, home to Alawites in Lebanon who support the Syrian president, have fought skirmishes over the past few weeks with Sunni Muslim residents of Bab al-Tabbaneh who support Syria's opposition.
