Qatar Pledges $500 Million to Sudan's Darfur

Qatar has pledged $500 million to help rebuild Sudan's war-battered Darfur region.

Qatari officials made the announcement Monday in Doha, where delegates are gathered for the final day of a donor conference to raise funds for development and reconstruction in Darfur.

Prior to the start of the conference on Sunday, Britain promised $100 million to Sudan over three years, with about half of that going to Darfur.

The European Union also pledged $35 million.

Darfur has been racked by fighting and violence since rebel groups launched an uprising against Sudan's central government in 2003.

The United Nations estimates more than 300,000 people have died and close to two million civilians have been forced from their homes. Periodic fighting and tribal clashes continue.
