S. Korean Soldier Kills 5 Fellow Troops

FILE - South Korean buses are seen transporting tourists near the border in Goseong, east of Seoul, from the North's Kumgang resort on July 13, 2008.

A South Korean soldier has killed five fellow soldiers and wounded five others at the border with North Korea.

A South Korean military official said the army sergeant fired his rifle at an outpost in Gangwon province, east of Seoul. The soldier fled the scene with his weapon.

Nothing has indicated that North Korea was involved. Tensions are high between the rivals, with North Korea recently conducting a series of missile and artillery drills. South Korea repeatedly vows to respond if provoked by the North.

All able-bodied South Korean men must serve two years in the military. The Korean Peninsula is still technically in a state of war. The Korean War of the 1950s ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.
