Two Dead as Cyclone Hits Bangladesh

Bangladeshis stand by the coast of the Bay of Bengal, before the expected landfall of tropical storm Mora in Chittagong, Bangladesh, May 29, 2017.

A tropical storm made landfall Tuesday in southeastern Bangladesh, killing two people and destroying thousands of homes.

Authorities said the deaths were the result of trees that fell in the heavy winds and rain.

There was particular concern for the 200,000 Rohingya refugees from neighboring Myanmar who are sheltering in Bangladesh in camps with less sturdy temporary housing.

Ahead of the storm, authorities evacuated some 300,000 people to shelters.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the storm had maximum winds of up to 117 kilometers per hour when it came ashore, and was expected to weaken as it continued moving further inland to the north.
