The capital of Blue Nile state, Damazin, is being described as quiet, tense and largely devoid of signs of civilian life.
The city appears to be now completely under the control of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), who are patrolling the otherwise empty streets, following the outbreak in fighting there last Thursday between SAF and the SPLA-north soldiers loyal to the now deposed governor, Malik Agar.
His replacement, Lt. General Yahia Mohammed Kheir tells VOA that fighting is continuing 30 kilometers south of Damazin, as SAF troops push towards the SPLA-north stronghold of Kurmuk, where Kheir says Agar is holed up with his generals.
VOA reporter Alsanosi Ahmed travelled to Damazin on Monday and met with the newly installed military governor of the state.
