Russian President Says Israel Not Planning to Strike Iran

Russian President Dmitri Medvedev says Israeli officials have assured him that they are not planning a military strike on Iran.

In an interview with CNN released Sunday, Mr. Medvedev says Israeli President Shimon Peres made the promise during a meeting last month in the Russian resort city of Sochi.

The Russian leader says an attack on Iran would create a humanitarian disaster, a vast number of refugees, and a desire by Iran to take its revenge on Israel and several other countries.

He says that although Russia does not have a defense agreement with Iran, it would not be indifferent to such an attack.

Mr. Medvedev also says Russia has the right to sell S300 air defense missiles to Iran, but provided little detail on if or when they would be delivered.

Mr. Medvedev also confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a secret visit to Moscow earlier this month.

Media reports said Mr. Netanyahu traveled to Russia on September seventh to pressure Moscow into not selling the missiles to Iran.

The Russian leader did not release any details of the visit.
