U.S. President Donald Trump expressed hope Wednesday that Hong Kong and China will be able to work things out in the wake of massive protests in Hong Kong against proposed amendments that would allow China to request extradition of criminal suspects from the city for trial in China. While Trump avoided taking sides in the controversy, the State Department and some lawmakers say they share the concern of Hong Kong citizens who fear that the amendments could increase China's control of the autonomous region.
