An Iraqi tribal leader has been shot and killed in southern Baghdad, one day after at least four Sunni tribal leaders were killed in a suicide bombing at a hotel in Iraq's capital.
Officials say Hamid Abdul Farhan al-Shujairi was killed in a drive-by shooting Tuesday in the neighborhood of Saidiya. It was unclear if he was Sunni or Shi'ite.
On Tuesday, an al-Qaida-linked group in Iraq claimed responsibility for Monday's suicide bombing at the Mansour Hotel in Baghdad.
The Islamic State of Iraq said on a Web site used by militants that the bombing was in response to an Iraqi police raid on a Sunni family house in al-Anbar province in which the father was detained and one of his daughters was raped.
The Sunni tribal leaders killed in the attack were linked to an alliance fighting al-Qaida.
In other news Tuesday, Iraqi forces raided the home of Iraq's Sunni culture minister, Asad Kamal al-Hashimi, who is alleged to have ordered the February 2005 assassination attempt against a Sunni politician, Mithal al-Alusi. That attack killed two sons of the targeted politician.
